Before there is a lesson about a plant, there is a family. Vovó in the garden. PopPop with his hands in the dirt. A scraped knee, a jar on a windowsill, a grandmother who knows which flower to reach for. The botany, the scripture, and the kitchen lab all hang on that narrative hook, which is why a child who cannot yet define a term can still tell you exactly why Vovó chose the plant she chose. This is the piece that makes the curriculum stick, and it is the piece most curricula skip. Facts taught cold are facts forgotten by Friday.

Inside the guide

Open the guide on Monday morning and the week is already built. The read-aloud is scripted, the discussion questions are written, the memory verse is chosen, and the kitchen lab tells you exactly which supplies to set on the counter. Nothing is left for you to research the night before. What makes this guide unusual is how much it carries at once: a single week on a single plant quietly weaves Bible, science, language arts, math, art, history, geography, Latin, health, and character, and the Week at a Glance page tells you which day carries which. You are not stacking ten subjects into a day. You are teaching one plant well, and the disciplines come with it.

Inside the notebook

It is a consumable workbook, but calling it that undersells what happens on the page. She draws the plant she just held. She records what it smelled like. She answers, in her own handwriting, a question that has no answer key, because some of the best questions in this curriculum genuinely do not have one. The enrichment work is deliberately marked optional, complete it if you have time, because a curriculum that punishes a hard week is a curriculum abandoned in February. This is also the practical answer to the record-keeping question: dated, sequential, in your child's own hand, showing observation, narration, scripture copywork, and real measurement across thirty-six weeks.

Each card carries a heritage botanical illustration on the front, the kind you would expect in a nineteenth-century plate book, alongside the plant's common name and its Latin binomial. The back is the working side: what the plant tastes like, what it does, and how it is prepared at a level your child can genuinely handle. The card format does something a textbook cannot. It is portable, so it goes in a pocket on a walk. It is durable, so it survives the walk. And it is a set, which triggers the collecting instinct children already have. Children who will not sit still for a botany chapter will absolutely sort, quiz, and trade a deck of cards they own.

Each week's kitchen lab gets its own card: what to gather, what to do, in steps your child can follow with your hands nearby. The preparations are matched to what she can actually manage at her level, which means they start simple and grow genuinely ambitious as she does. Wednesday is the day the week stops being about a plant and starts being with one. Your child measures, steeps, stirs, smells, and tastes, then records what she observed in her notebook and says whether it worked. Real chemistry, learned the way it has always been learned in a family kitchen, with an adult paying attention. Safety instruction is printed on the card itself rather than buried in a manual, so the caution arrives at the moment it is needed.

Each week's set carries one card in each of four directions: Body, Faith, Family, and Wonder. What is happening inside you when a wound heals. What God says about healing and the healed. What it means to care for the people at this table. And the questions with no clean answer at all, the ones a child turns over for days. These are written as genuine questions, not comprehension checks with an answer in the back. Nobody is being quizzed. A young child, an older sibling, and a grandparent can all answer the same card honestly and differently, which is exactly the conversation you want.
